New York Maritime Innovation Center (NYMIC) and R1 Labs are hosting NYC Maritime Hackathon 2019: Connecting Big Data and Maritime, March 29th-March 31st. The hackathon addresses real world challenges around data in the shipping industry, focusing on ports, logistics and supply chain. Topics include Maritime Big Data, Cyber Security and Supply Chain Velocity.

From shipboard navigation, engineering, and cargo handling systems, to port and intermodal operations, through cargo and logistics technologies - big data offers significant opportunities to enhance operational and environmental safety, increase efficiency, and improve reliability and visibility in commerce. But the increasing reliance on data also presents challenges to security, standardization, and interoperability.

150+ participants (developers, designers, domain experts) will convene for 36 hours of building prototypes, rapid fire market validations and business model inventions. Participants will have rare access to top maritime industry and tech executives, investors and entrepreneurs so they can effectively work on building MVPs for commercially viable solutions.

Hackathon participants will have access to industry data sets. Problems participants may tackle include:

• How can machine learning and data analytics be used to optimize energy consumption, reduce emissions, and provide savings?

• How can the marine transportation incorporate IoT?

• Can we make shipping units smart with GPS tracking, IoT, and transceivers?

• Can we use Predictive Analytics or Machine Learning to shorten the time an ocean shipment goes from origin to destination?

Grand prize winners will be offered a cash sum, plus a unique chance to participate in the inaugural NYMIC Bootcamp Accelerator and work with industry execs and investors to grow their solutions for market-readiness.

The hackathon kicks off Friday night with keynotes from:

  • Inna Kuznetsova (Board Member | Independent Non-Executive Director, Chairman of Remuneration, Nomination Committee, Global Ports Investments Plc (LSE: GLPR); Entrepreneur, Advisor),
  • Tero Hottinen, (Director of Emerging Digital Business, Cargotec)
